E3 2012: Survival Horror

Provided By Electronic Arts

Microsoft and EA finally revealed a gameplay walkthrough for the highly anticipated return of Leon Kennedy to the Resident Evil Franchise and Isaac Clarke to the Dead Space franchise. Both brought some similar elements during their press conferences but also kept true to their roots for all the die-hard fans out there.

Now for me being a hardcore Resident Evil fan since the early beginnings, I am truly psyched for RE6. They are keeping true to their last installment with the co-op dynamic which is a smart move, since it was highly praised and enjoyed on the last one. What really brings this to the next level for me is that it seems like they have finally figured out how to balance the updated action sequences, while bringing back all the horror and suspense that it was originally known and loved for. It also looks like a lot of the kinks and complaints from the last installment have been greatly improved on, with the action buttons becoming more prevelant and the melee attacks also becoming a greater form of attack when your out of ammo (and that is always at the absolute worst moment) . So it finally looks like Resident Evil is joining the ranks of other big name franchises in terms of the crisp graphics and seamless flow of the gameplay.

Now Dead Space is still a fairly new franchise, compared to Resident Evil. So their move to make Dead Space 3 co-op, is some what surprising. Personally I’m still on the fence about this new addition to the game. I feel like its worked well for RE5, but Dead Space has gained its fans and popularity by being the most horrifying game on the market right now, and I have to wonder if this will take most of the suspense and scare-tactics out of the experience all together. Although they did mention that it can be played in either single player or co-op. And from what I saw of the gameplay footage it is staying true to the horrifying monsters and incredibly eerie environments and upping the ante of course, so I have to trust that EA has more to reveal.
