Chappie Trailer

Neil Blomkamp, director of District 9 and Elysium, draws us back into his vision of Sci-fi with Chappie. Chappie. Played by Sharito Copley,Chappie  is robot with advanced artificial intelligence, giving him the ability to learn, feel, and emote. Raised by a surrogate human family on the street, The automaton struggles to define himself and adapt to the world around him. However, there are those who feel that such a leap in robotics is dangerous. Thus the drive for Vincent (Hugh Jackman) who wants Chappie dismantled.

Blomkamp rose to be one of my favorite  Sci-fi directors, with District 9’s intense action and docu-drama filmmaking. His second film, Elysium, I found disappointing, mostly on account of the mediocre story and limited action. My hope is Chappie will make up for it. All of Blomkamp’s films have social commentary embedded within. District 9 focused on apartheid, Elysium with class differences, and Chappie mostly likely comments on technophobia.  Though at first glance Chappie resembles your generic Pinocchio robot tale, but hopefully Blomkamp  will offer a fresh twist. I also noticed Chappie resembles the emotional depth  of Short Circuit’s robot Johnny Five combined  with the physical appearance of  Appleseed’s cyborg Briareros. Not sure if that was intentional or not but it definitely gives a nice nod to pop culture robots.   Chappie hits theaters March 6, 2015.
