Ant-Man Trailer: Small Hero Big Action!

When the future is threatened, veteran scientist Dr. Hank Pym recruits former thief Scott Lang to become the hero Ant-Man. Together they plan a heist to steal Dr. Pym’s own technology from an evil corporation. Set to release July 17, 2015, the film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, and Michael Douglas.

Once again, another Marvel movie is cranked out for all to enjoy. Not to knock the Marvel movies, I love them for the most part. They deliver exactly what you’d expect and then some, on occasion. But Ant-Man is a curious prospect. ¬†When I first heard of the film’s conception I was particularly excited because directors Edgar Wright, (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and Joe Cornish,( Attack the Block) were writing it with Wright set to direct. I had never been an Ant-Man fan but the premise Edgar Wright had pitched as a heist movie with super hero elements sounded pretty cool. Unfortunately, due to creative differences, Edgar Wright left the project, and the film is now helmed by Peyton Reed, (Yes Man).

From what I’ve seen in the trailer and the official synopsis the heist premise is still there. I wonder; how much of it has changed from the original version? Supposedly an Ant-Man movie was in the works since 2008, right around the time the Marvel universe was just getting started. Since then Marvel has built a pretty solid formula to its movies and I doubt it will be getting rid of them anytime soon. My only hope is that the film can hold together despite altercations and switches in story and directors. Another thing that sort of bugs me about the film is the trailer itself. It felt almost too serious to me. I think given the cast and premise of Ant-Man’s powers, there should be a lot of comedic opportunities. But perhaps we will see those ¬†moments in later trailers. Either way I’ll probably see Ant-Man, though my expectations are dubious at best.
