Scalebound Gameplay Trailer

Introduced at last year’s E3, Scalebound comes from Platinum Games, more specifically it comes from the mind of Hideki Kamiya, who brought us Devil May Cry and the Bayonetta┬áSeries. Following the trailer’s debut last year, there were a lot of questions left to be answered. Why is that kid wearing headphones? What’s that dragon doing here? Why does that kid have a DMC4-style-Nero-demon-arm? This gameplay demonstration answered, well — none of those questions, but at least it looked cool.

The game is described as an open world game with RPG elements. Aside from that, there wasn’t much else said about it, leaving us to pick it apart and see what’s there. By the looks of it, it doesn’t lean too heavily into the RPG aspect, as there isn’t any turn based combat in the game. No doubt, some will see this as dumbing down the game’s combat, but personally, I think it’s pretty freeing to just run up and hit a thing.

While we’re on the combat, the headphones… It’s not easily apparent why our main character, Drew, needs them in the first place. The only thing that I’ve come up with is that the headphones are somehow tied to your health during combat. Maybe the music switched up depending on how dire your situation is, either changing genre or fading out. I mean, there’s nothing that I can see tying the music to the dragon – a dragon that looks like it’s carrying the team in this particular situation.

Oh, by the way, there’s co-op, too.

Scalebound is set to release sometime in 2016 exclusively for Xbox One.
