Rise of The Tomb Raider Trailer

A new trailer for Crystal Dynamics’ Rise of the Tomb Raider dropped a couple of days ago, and with it comes more questions than answers.

Now, I was a fan of the first game, 2013’s Tomb Raider, but one of the common criticisms the game received from others and myself was that there wasn’t exactly ¬†focus on tomb raiding…or tombs for that matter. Yes, there were maybe a handful spread throughout the game, but they weren’t much more than small caves filled with wolves or enemy characters to shoot with a “treasure” near the end. While there was something at the end for players to strive to attain, that something was, in the grand scheme of things, nothing much.

With this new trailer, it looks as though Crystal Dynamics has taken this criticism to heart, focusing on the tombs, and with them, the tomb raiding. The tomb shown in question seems to have a lot more of a reason for being and being explored, as Lara seeks to find treasure that her father mentioned in a recording. Not only that, but it looks like Crystal Dynamics is incorporating more cinematic aspects in Lara’s raiding.

But do the cinematic aspects and character motivations only apply to a few tombs or all of them? Or worse, will they repeat what they’ve done in the past and make the only interesting tombs available in the story, leaving the others to be no more than small caves? Anytime there’s been discussion on the game, they’ve talked about it in such a way, where you’d believe that they wanted to do this for all tombs.

We’ll have to wait until later this year, when the game launches exclusively for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
